ADANA – Ayşe Alağaş, the wife of 70-year-old prisoner Hacı Alağaş, who suffers from serious health problems, asked: “If peace is being discussed, why are ill prisoners still in prison?”
Hacı Alağaş, 70, is being held in Adana Suluca No. 1 High Security Closed Prison. He is among the prisoners listed as ill by the Human Rights Association (İHD). Alağaş was arrested on October 15, 2021, after a prison sentence of 7 years and 6 months given on the charge of “terrorist organization membership” was upheld. Alağaş suffered a heart attack in prison on November 25, 2025. He underwent angiography twice at Adana City Training and Research Hospital. It was reported in the press that he received treatment while handcuffed. In addition to his heart condition, Alağaş also suffers from vision problems, joint pain and shortness of breath.
‘ILL PRISONERS MUST BE RELEASED’
Ayşe Alağaş emphasized that her husband suffers from many illnesses and should be released. “My husband had a heart attack and when he was taken to the hospital we were not informed. When he did not call, we asked the prison for information. After persistent calls we learned that he had been taken to the hospital. We were able to see him with the permission of the prosecutor,” she said.
Stating that her husband’s health problems continue, Ayşe Alağaş said: “My husband has eye problems, joint pain and shortness of breath. Before the heart attack he was using an oxygen tank. After the heart attack, medication started to be given instead of oxygen. His illnesses are still continuing.”
Drawing attention to the “Peace and Democratic Society Process,” Ayşe Alağaş stressed that ill prisoners must be released. She concluded: “If peace is being discussed, why are ill prisoners still in prison? How can it be explained that a 70-year-old ill person is being kept in prison? How can it be explained in terms of peace that he was hospitalized and his family was not informed for a week? There are prisoners who have completed their sentences but are not being released. This situation is compatible neither with conscience, nor with law, nor with peace.”
