ÎDIR - Stating that the applications made by prisoners in Dumlu Prisons Nos. 1 and 2 against the oppression and violations of rights remain inconclusive, DEM Party MP Yılmaz Hun said that prisoners are preparing for a hunger strike against this.

Pressures against prisoners in prisons are increasing day by day. Peoples' Equality and Democracy (DEM) Party MPs held a meeting with prisoners and prison administration in Erzurum Dumlu High Security Closed Prison No 1 and 2, which has been on the agenda with rights violations for a long time. DEM Party Îdir (Iğdır) MP Yılmaz Hun, who was part of the delegation, spoke about the meeting.

Hun said that they visited the prison upon the complaints made by both prisoners and their families and stated that according to the information they obtained, the prison staff mistreated prisoners and restricted their social rights.

RIGHT TO TREATMENT IS DENIED

Stating that prisoners’ right to treatment is especially prevented, Hun stated that prisoners are prevented from accessing a doctor or are forced to be examined in handcuffs.

Prisoners are forced to undergo body searches. Shoes are removed for the search. Before the end of the ventilation hours, the ventilation areas of the prisoners are forcibly closed arbitrarily by the guard teams called 'robocops'. Force is used against prisoners who want to exercise their rights.

Hun stated that the prisoners' petitions to the will of the prison, the Ministry of Justice and the prison prosecutor's office against the violations remained inconclusive and that the prisoners stated that they were preparing to go on a hunger strike against this.

‘THE STATE MUST RETURN TO THE LAW’

Hun said: "Prisons are the simplest form of the state's behaviour towards its citizens. The socialisation of peace needs to permeate all institutions. This needs to be ensured especially in the field of law. Prisons are the first place where the law is reflected. At the current stage, conditions in prisons are worsening rather than improving."

Hun criticised the Administrative and Observation Boards in prisons for arbitrarily preventing the release of prisoners and said, "This board puts itself in the place of a court and burns the executions of prisoners, postpones their release and unlawfully prolongs their detention periods."

Hun concluded: "The rights violations in prisons are a situation that undermines the construction of a democratic society. Especially the people expect a change in prisons. For this, the state must return to the law as soon as possible."
