Mûş - While the Kurdish issue is being discussed peacefully, the construction of a high security prison has started in Mûş. "The construction of the prison does not serve the spirit of the process," said ÖHD member Metin Güllü. 

 

While legal arrangements are expected to be made in order to solve the Kurdish issue through peaceful methods with the call of Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan, a new prison will be built in Mûş. 

 

The prison, which is under construction in the Ewran (Yeşilova) town of Mûş, is being built on an area of approximately 400 decares. The construction of the prison, which started quietly, caused reactions. Lawyer Metin Güllü, a member of the Association of Lawyers for Freedom (ÖHD), said that the construction of the prison was against the spirit of the process. 

 

Reminding the PKK's decision to dissolve and disarm, Güllü criticised the government's stance and emphasised the need for the release of ill and political prisoners. "The release of the ill and political prisoners, who have suffered great damage in the process, suffered great losses and continued the struggle with great labour, will give life to this peace process," he said. 

 

Stating that the prison to be built is of "enormous size", Güllü said that the construction of the prison "does not serve the spirit" of the process. Reminding of the fortresses built in Kurdish provinces during the past solution processes, Güllü said: "We hope that these prisons will not interrupt the process. Currently, prisons have been turned into a cudgel of the political power. Unjust and arbitrary arrests are being used to silence the opposition."

 

Stating that the commission established in the Parliament should listen to people from all walks of life, Güllü emphasised that Abdullah Öcalan should be interviewed for a solution. 

 

Güllü said that the commission should be selective about the people it listens to and added: "As a legal organisation, we demand that this process be put on a legal basis as soon as possible. There may be an execution regulation for the release of political prisoners. This is the most important thing in the first place. Afterwards, legal arrangements should be made so that people can speak freely and evaluate this process."
