Protest demanding healthcare justified as 'membership of a terrorist organisation'

AMED - In the new indictment prepared against imprisoned politician Hülya Alökmen, the protest carried out by healthcare workers to demand health services was justified as "membership of a terrorist organization".

A new indictment was prepared against Amed Metropolitan Municipality Co-Mayor Hülya Alökmen, who was dismissed and replaced by a trustee, on the charge of "being a member of a terrorist organization". The prison sentence of 10 years and 6 months given to Alökmen due to her Democratic Society Congress (DTK) activities was overturned. A new indictment was prepared as a result of the statements of confessing witnesses Umit Akbıyık and Saban Elçin against Alökmen, who is still being sued for "being a member of a terrorist organization" due to her political activities while she was serving as Amed Provincial Co-Mayor of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP).

In the indictment prepared with the request to combine Alökmen's trial with the ongoing case, the confessing witness Umit Akbıyık said: "This person is in the HDP Party Assembly and Central Executive Board, serves as a staff in the political field of the PKK/KCK terrorist organization, and carries the instructions from the organization to the HDP. She is the person who transferred the information to the provincial and district organizations of the province."

HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS' ACTION DISTORTED

Again, the statements of open witness Şaban Elçin were included. Elçin claimed that Alökmen, who was a nurse, was a doctor. Elçin also criminalized the "White Action" carried out by healthcare professionals in 2015 to provide healthcare services to citizens in places where there was a curfew. Elçin claimed that the actions were carried out to disrupt medical aid to soldiers and police officers injured in Sur.

Elçin’s allegations were included in the indictment. Elçin said: “(…) The purpose of the White protests was ostensibly to improve the working conditions of healthcare professionals, but these protests were carried out especially on days when there were soldiers and police officers injured in clashes in Sur and to disrupt medical aid to the injured soldiers and police officers. A doctor named Hülya Alökmen was also participating in these protests. Hülya Alökmen was a member of the SES Union and was warning the medical personnel in her union not to treat the security forces..."

It was requested that the indictment demanding that Alökmen be punished for "membership in a terrorist organization" be combined with the case filed against Alökmen in Diyarbakır 5th High Criminal Court while she was serving as HDP Amed Provincial Co-Mayor. The court accepted the request and decided to merge it with the file.
